SO, WHAT'S

 IT ALL ABOUT?

The question is: What exactly happens during each broadcast of the SUNSET REVIEW...?

Well, three things happen:

  • Roger and Randy talk to each other and to their vast audio radiance.

  • They play novelty records from Randy's vast vinyl vault (yeah, there are also some CDs in the vault)

  • There are vastly amusing (at least they think so) Special Features

And here's what you can expect in terms of these Special Features.

Repeating Appearances by Various Merkis Palms Residents LOCAL TALENT

Various residents of Merkis Palms, the town that time remembers but people forget, appear on the program on a fairly regular basis.  Among them are:

  • John J. Jasper, the Question Man who has more than enough questions for the plethora of answers (usually one-word answers) that plague the denizens of Merkis Palms.

  • Oliver Phelps, a retired grapefruit farmer and somewhat older gentleman who, despite something of a hearing problem, dispenses his own unique version of wisdom, often from the front porch of his house on Merkis Avenue, where he usually can be seen practicing head stands, using his special helmet with the suction cup on the top.

  • Lolla Nebula, astrologer extraordinaire, whose forecasts, while steeped in the esoterica of astral confabulations and thus somewhat abstruse, even marginally comprehensible, guide us in large and small details of our mundane but otherwise ordinary lives, almost always with the same advice.

  • Percival Heavens, owner-operator of the Merkis Palms Mini Drive-Thru Museum and President of the Merkis Palms Historical Society, who some refer to as the "town snoop," and who frequently provides program listeners with information about some unsuspecting resident of Merkis Palms, often someone who holds some dubious world's record of some sort.

  • Walter Withersgap, culture maven who reads anonymous poems off a dusty back shelf at the Merkis Palms Society for the Preservation of Culture and Purification of Bodily Fluids, the M-P-S-F-T-P-O-C-A-P-O-B-F (you can find an example of the Culture Corner on our Listen page).

  • Linda the Story Person, who tells stories to Billy Furtively, a youngster from Merkis Palms who has amazingly remained 6 years old during all the years the program has been on the air.

Commercials LOCAL BUSINESSES

OK, so maybe these aren't exactly Special Features, but in a way they are, since they aren't heard anywhere else on the radio and concern business enterprises in Merkis Palms, the town that time remembers but people forget, which include:

  • Creamed Horseradish Advisory Council (nobody knows why they decided to locate their offices in Merkis Palms, but they did).

  • The Sparkle Plenty Rock Shop, Jimmy Wingtip proprietor, where the stones are smooth and cool and sometimes glow in the dark (especially those collected from the site of the unfortunate nuclear power-plant melt-down).

  • The Sunnyside-Up Tanning Salon and Breakfast Buffet, proprietors Wayne and Susan Patroni, where it pays to get your rays and the food is good.

  • The Cosmic Center for Universal One-Ness, where I and Thou become Them.

  • Shady Rest Mortuary and Drive-through Orchard, your one-stop place for picking or planting them.

  • Memory Lane Thrift Shop, Mavis Norvis proprietor, where other people's losses become your gains.

  • Irv Johnson's Hyundaihatsubaruki car dealership - When you see it on the highway, you'll say, "Looky, there goes another Hyundaihatsubaruki!"

  • SCAN - the Self Center for the Acquisition of Narcissism, where customers learn to look out for number one.

  • Adobe Flats Carbonated Mineral Water, the drink that keeps on refreshing.

  • Love's Lariat, where Larry Lovelace helps Merkis Palms residents rope in that special certain someone.

  • Le Petite Burrito restaurant which combines French and Mexican cuisine in one taste-tempting delight.

  • Barstucks Coffee Emporiums with 17 locations in downtown Merkis Palms (you can find an example of a Barstucks commercial on our Listen page).

  • Zonco Meat-O-Matic, the handy dandy kitchen appliance that makes meat look different.

  • Thighs R Us, where fat is where it's at but thin is in.

  • Venal and Mercenary, Attorneys at Law, where if you haven't made out your will already, you can leave it all to them.

  • Can-Do 24 Hour Market, offering every type and variety of food that has been canned for your eating convenience.

Special Interviews MORE LOCAL TALENT

In addition to local Merkis Palms residents who appear fairly regularly on the program, there are also a variety individuals brought into the massive KSPC studio complex for special interviews.  Some examples are:

  • Noted local psychologist, Dr. Osgood Usegood, a graduate of the Tehachapie Western Institute of Technology (TWIT) who has appeared on the program to provide psychological advice to Merkis Palms residents who (for reasons often eclipsing comprehension) have written in to the program.

  • Fenster Spackle (no relation to Ambrose Fenster), who has informed listeners about the correct meanings and usage of words (you can hear his interview on our Listen page).

  • Memory Expert, Ambrose Fenster (no relation to Fenster Spackle), who came on the show to...uh...to...to...do something...umm...well, you know.

  • Professor Dietrich Bieterman, Professor of Nutritionology at the Tehachapie Western Institute of Technology (TWIT), who has discussed various issues regarding food and dieting.
